Exam Access Arrangements

What are Exam Access Arrangements?

Exam access arrangements in the UK ensure that students with disabilities, special educational needs (SEN), or temporary conditions have equal opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in exams. These provisions aim to level the playing field, accommodating individual needs. Common arrangements include extra time, scribes, readers, and specialist equipment. They're designed to ensure fairness and equal opportunities, enabling students to showcase their true abilities and reach their full potential in exams.

What is the Process?

The process for accessing exam access arrangements begins with the school's SENCo identifying students in need based on various assessments and observations. Initial support strategies are implemented within the school setting. If formal arrangements are required, the SENCo has a process where it can conduct comprehensive assessments considering the student's learning barriers. I can work with SENCo’s to provide recommendations and evidence to support the student's entitlement to specific arrangements. The school communicates with exam boards to ensure proper documentation and accommodation during exams. Based on the evidence, students are entitled to arrangements such as extra time, scribes, readers, separate rooms, or rest breaks, tailored to their needs. This process aims to ensure equal opportunities for students with disabilities or special needs, allowing them to demonstrate their abilities effectively in exams.
